Unit 2: Russia 1917-1941

With the emergence of Russia as a superpower after the Second World War, it is important that students understand how Russia became a Communist country under Lenin and grew to a position of strength under Stalin in the 1930′s and 1940′s.

 

 

Students cover 4 sections:

1. The collapse of the Tsarist Regime 1917

2. Bolshevik takeover and consolidation 1917-24

3. The nature of Stalin’s dictatorship

4. Economic and social changes 1928-39

The Exam

Students sit a formal examination in the June of Year 11.

It is 1 hour 15 minutes long.

The paper consists of 4 questions.

Question 1a is a short answer based around a source [4]

Question 1b is a short answer which asks students to describe the key features of an event [6]

Question 1c is a longer answer which asks students to explain the effects of an event [8]

Question 1d is a longer answer which asks students to explain the causes of an event [8]

Question 2 is a longer answer which asks students to explain how an event or occurance came about or how an event changed the period [8]

Question 3 is an essay question which asks students to explain the importance of 4 factors and then come to a conclusion about which is the most important based upon the relationships between the factors.
